North Carolina by Carol M. Highsmith,
North Carolina is one of America's most temperate, scenic, and historic states. It is the home of exquisite colonial mansions, Civil War battlefields, and energetic midsized cities. It is one of the nation's most modern and distinct states, and many localities have been rated among the nation's top-ten places to live. In "North Carolina: A Photographic Tour, photographer Carol M. Highsmith and writer Ted Landphair take the reader on a guided tour of the state's incomparable sites and scenic vistas that highlight its remarkable diversity. You will visit Durham, the home of the venerable Duke University as well as one of the world's most modern research enclaves. In Raleigh, "the City of Oaks," with its oak trees, magnolias, and restored Victorian houses, the reader will discover the epitome of the classic city of the Old South. In Chapel Hill, the home of the University of North Carolina and legendary Sutton's Drug Store, one will encounter what has been called "the southern part of Heaven." If you love to decorate, High Point--the "Furnishings Capital of the World"--full of furniture factories and outlet shops, will become a must to visit in person. A great surprise will greet the admirer of architecture in Asheville, which has more Art Deco structures than any other southeastern city--except Miami Beach--and is the home of the Biltmore Estate, a Victorian mansion that is the largest private residence in North America. These and many other memorable cities and places are brought vividly to life in "North Carolina: A Photographic Tour. With its striking photos and thoughtfully insightful text, it is an exceptional book that makes a superb memento or gift for anyone who hasvisited or is planning to visit this unique state.

A Guide to North Carolina's Wineries by Joseph Mills,
A Guide to North Carolina's Wineries by Joseph Mills,
In 1584, when the settlers who later became famous as the Lost Colony arrived in North Carolina, Arthur Barlowe reported to Sir Walter Raleigh that the land was "full of grapes . . . both on the sand and on the green soil, on the hills as in the plains, as well on every little shrub, as also climbing toward the tops of high cedars, that I think in all the world the like abundance is not to be found." Tradition says that among the grapes the settlers found was the Scuppernong Mother Vine, which is still producing grapes. Thus began the North Carolina wine industry. Today, North Carolina has 22 wineries and over 250 vineyards. It ranks 10th in the nation in total wine production, with annual retail sales estimated at around $25 million. The state even has the most-visited winery in the United States at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville. The entries in A Guide to North Carolina Wineries, provide historical information, comprehensive wine lists, and interviews with the owners and winemakers at all of the state's wineries. Each profile also includes a recipe or food-pairing suggestion for the establishment's wines. In addition to enjoying the information about the wineries, you'll meet some of the people who work in the business -- vineyard managers, farmers who sell their grapes, architects who design the wineries, and the itinerant bottler who travels with his truck, bottling vintages for wineries that don't have their own equipment. Whether you're interested in sampling new vintages, reading about the fascinating people behind a rapidly growing industry, or incorporating a visit to a winery during your travels, this guide will provide all the information you need.
